Douglas M. Sweany
May 12, 1919 – May 21, 2002
Douglas M. SWEANY, 83, 624 Fulton Ave., died at 1:15 p.m. Tuesday at Life Care Center, Rochester, where he was a patient two weeks. He was in failing health one year.
Born in Kokomo to Edward and Bessie GUSS SWEANY, he married Anna Louise BRUNING Nov. 18, 1945, in Savannah, Ga. She died Nov. 14, 1995.
Mr. Sweany lived in Rochester all his life execpt for two years in Savannah, Ga. He was a janitor at Rochester Middle School. He worked at Studebaker Corp., South Bend, Armour Dairy, Rochester, Fulton County Council on Aging and Ritz Craft Trailer Factory, Argos. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he earned a Bronze Star in the Battle for the Rhineland. He was a member of IOOF Lodge 47. He attended Rochester First Church of God and Grace United Methodist Church. As a youth, he was an accomplished softball pitcher.
Survivors include three sons, Douglas COURSEY and wife Carol A., Petoskey, Mich., Ron SWEANY and wife Melodie, Rochester, John SWEANY and wife Linda, Plymouth; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Betty HALL and husband John, Rochester, Helen EASTERAY and husband Walt, Bonita Springs, Fla.; one brother, Mel SWEANY, Rochester; several nieces and nephews.
Preceding in death with his wife were his parents, one daughter, Elaine BAUGHER, in 1998, and four sisters.
Services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at Foster & Good Funeral Home, Rochester, with Rev. David DITTMAN officiating. Burial will be at Rochester IOOF Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services.
