A native of Mecklenburg County, he had lived in Petersburg most of his life. He was a dealer in pulpwood.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth F. Smelley; three daughters; Mrs. Mildred S. Traylor, Mrs. Catherine S. Fisher, both of Prince George County, and Miss Jeanie Smelley of Petersburg; one brother, Alvin E. Smelley of Carson, and three grandsons.
Funeral services will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of J. T. Morriss & Son. The Rev. H. Edward Henderson, pastor of Second Baptist Church, will officiate.
Burial will be in Southlawn Memorial Park, Prince George County.
