Alvin Carleton (Bud) Smelley, 66, of Chesterfield, died Saturday, August 5, 2000 at Johnston-Willis Medical Center, Richmond.

Mr. Smelley, a native of Dinwiddie County, had served 17 years on and wa s a former Chairman of the Prince George County School Board. He was also owner of Carleton Motors, Past President of the Virginia Independent Automotive Dealers Association, and recipient of the 1990 State Quality Dealer's Award.

He was a member of the Ironbridge Baptist Church of Chester.

Mr. Smelley is survived by his wife, Russell Sheffield (Sugar) Smelley; three sons, Russell Carleton Smelley and wife, Allison of Santa Barbara, Calif., Mark Alan Smelley and wife, Susan of Chester, and Jeffrey Dale Smelley and wife, Angela of Midlothian; seven grandchildren; parents, Alvin Elmo and Gertrude Falk Smelley of Carson; and four sisters, Betty June Pratt of Williamsburg, Elva Williams, Mary Ellen Pratt and Peggy S. Lewis, all of Carson.
