Walter B Tewksbury (also known as John Walter according to some sources) of Tunkhannock, Pa enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania dental school where he won the 100-meter and 220-meter dashes at the Intercollegiate Games of 1898 and 1899. He was invited to represent the United States in Paris as a sprinter and hurdler at the Second modern Olympiad held in 1900, and brought home two gold medals, two silver, and a bronze. These victories overshadowed his earlier collegiate triumphs. Walter practiced dentistry in Tunkhannock until his retirement in 1946, and died in 1968 at the age of 93. In 1999, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission erected a commemorative marker in his honor, in front of the Tunkhannock high school stadium. His Olympic bronze medal is displayed at the Wyoming County Historical Society.
