OUTING - James J. "Jim" Gainor, age 77, of rural Outing, died Friday, Sept. 19, surrounded by his family.
He was born in St. Paul on Aug. 21, 1931, to Joseph and Teresa (Whelan) Gainor. He married Bernadine Hickey on Aug. 5, 1961, in Minneapolis. Jim attended St. Thomas Academy, St. Thomas College, graduated from Marquette University, majoring in finance. Jim served his country at Fort Detrick, Frederick, Md. He was a 30-year member of St. John's the Baptist Parish, Savage, and member of the Knights of Columbus since 1979. He was employed with Piper Jaffrey Inc., an investment banking firm and member of the New York stock exchange for 36 years. He was a security trader for 16 years and worked as a vice president in marketing and sales management. He was elected president of the Twin Cities Security Trader's Association in 1972 and served on its board of directors for eight years. In 1973 and 1974 he served on the board of the National Security Trader's Association in New York City. He was editor of their national magazine in 1973-1974. In 1980 he was elected president of the Minnesota Security Dealers Association.
He is survived by wife Bernie; sons, Joe (Liz) Gainor of Powell, Ohio, Greg Gainor of Eden Prairie, Geoff Gainor of Edina, Tom (Bronwyn) Gainor of Surprise, Ariz., Tim (Kris) Gainor of Lakeville; daughter Dette (Greg) Derr of Peoria, Ariz.; brother Thomas (Jan) Gainor of Mendota Heights; nine grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
Although Jim's greatest pride was his family, he was also very proud to serve as best man for seven very good friends.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23 at St. Emily's Catholic Church, Emily. Burial will be at Pine Ridge Cemetery, Emily, with full military honors given by the Myrin-James American Legion Post No. 443, Ironton. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at church. Memorial may be directed to St. Thomas Academy, Mendota Heights, or St. Emily's Catholic Church, Emily.
Arrangements are with the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby.
