As members of the 66th Squadron aboard the bomber Queen Marlene, Sgt Hites (engineer/top turret gunner) and eight others were killed in action in the Pas Des Calais Area, Escalles Sur Buchy, France when their plane was hit by five or six German FW 160s (Goering's Yellow Bellies). One member of the crew survived and was helped to escape by a French farmer. An account of the incident can be found at 44th Bomb Group Roll of Honor and Casualties (a pdf file), page 180.

Sgt Hite is the only person buried in Union Cemetery who was killed in action in World War II. Planning has begun to honor him specifically on Veterans Day, 2012.
New gray granite tablet marker installed and original grass marker reset by the Union Cemetery Historical Society on 18 May 2012.

Sgt Harold B Hite and his mother, Inez R Butts Hites are buried about 90-100 years northeast of the Butts-Hites family plot. Sgt Hites' father, brother, grandparents, aunt and uncle are buried in the family plot.
