Reese moved to Chattanooga and later to St. Elmo after the Civil War to open a general store with his brother. Later, he was the proprietor of the Natural Bridge Hotel on Lookout Mountain. Active in civic affairs, he was an alderman, school board member and St. Elmo's first mayor.
