Samuel Phillip Walk was born at Salem (then in Stokes County, now in Forsyth County), North Carolina. He was the fifth of seven known children of Charles Christian Walk (1805-1873) and Lydia Rothrock Walk (1806-1877), who married 27 Dec 1827 near Friedberg, Davidson County, North Carolina. Samuel moved with his parents and siblings to the Moravian community of West Salem, Edwards County, Illinois in 1844. Samuel died at Mills Prairie, Edwards County, Illinois.

Samuel married Eliza Ann Gibson (1845-1888) on 09 Aug 1866 at Mills Prairie, Edwards County, Illinois. Samuel was a Corporal in Capt. H.H. Walser's Company E, 63rd Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Infatry during the Civil War. He enlisted once more and served a total of 4 years. He was at the siege of Vicksburg. Samuel and Eliza were the parents of four known children, two boys and two girls. Three of the four children lived to maturity. The children were namely:

1. Esco Clinton Walk (1867-1943)
2. William Orestes Walk (1868-a1873)
3. Lillian Ora Walk Moore (1869-1931)
4. Almarinda M Walk (1870-1939)
