James Flanagan(The Elder)was the son of Ambrose Flanagan and Bridget Winwright. It is said that he came to the US from Ireland in 1743 with his parents and 2 uncles, Whittle and James. He married Serena Whittle on March 26, 1745. They had 4 children:

Ambrose born 1747 Louisa Co, VA died 1834 in Fluvanna Co, VA

*Whittle born Nov 18,1749 Louisa Co, VA died 1830 Franklin Co, AL

Mary born 1751 died Nov 11, 1796

James Winwright,Jr. born Nov 11,1752 died April 10,1838 in Fluvanna Co, VA

He built a home called "Red Hill" in the Greensprings District of Louisa County, VA in 1747 and it is located south of Route 22 on the west side of Route 15 near the waters of Hudson and Bunches' Creeks. In old maps there is a road called "Red Hill Trail" leading off Hwy 15(South of Route 22) that led to the house. It is said that the house still stands today.
James W. Flanagan is believed to have died at Red Hill and is buried near by.
