Robert E. Moser, 85, of Neptune, died Monday, Sept. 20, 2010.

Born Aug. 17, 1925 in Elizabeth. Robert was the son of George and Bertha Moser. The family moved to Neptune when Robert was four years old.

Robert's life was characterized by public service as president of his high school class in Neptune, World War II Navy veteran stationed in Guam, Commissioner of the Boy Scouts of Monmouth County and devoted teacher at Monmouth County Vocational High School in Middletown.

He ran his own electrical contracting business for 20 years and was co-proprietor of Layton-Moser Hardware in Avon during the 60s and 70s.

As a young man, Robert played semi-pro football with the New Jersey Yellow Jackets and was known to be a graceful dancer.

Everyone called him "Pudge." During his long and happy retirement, he turned to art and family.

Robert's most prolific and treasured works were his wood carvings, particularly those of Santa Claus. A Christmas Gift: The Santa Carvings of Robert E. Moser, a recent book by his grandson, Steven Dundas, pays tribute to the over 200 wood sculptures Moser created.

He especially loved his seven grandchildren, David and Aaron Moser, Ryan, Riley and Brandon Davenport, and Steven and Mark Dundas. He was always delighted by the annual "Moser Family Reunion" generously hosted by Mark and Carol Moser.

Robert was predeceased by his brother, George; and sister, Elva.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jean Moser; children, William Moser of Great Barrington, Mass., Richard Moser of Highland Park, Susan Dundas of Howell, and Beth Davenport of Barnegat; sister-in-law, Rita Moser of Oceanport; brother-in-law, Charles Stroud of Statesville, N.C.; daughter-in-law, Beth Reitman-Moser, Great Barrington; and 11 nephews and nieces.

Robert faced declining health with remarkable composure and the unfailing support of his wife, Jean. In his last days, he was of good spirits surrounded by family. He lived well, died well and was loved by all who knew him. May he rest in peace.

The viewing will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, followed by services at 10 a.m. at Ely Funeral Home, 3316 Route 33, Neptune. The burial will follow at St. Anne's Cemetery, 1610 Allenwood Road, Wall.
