Walter John Key was born in Freethorpe Parish, Blofield District, Norfolk County, England to John Briggs Key and Judith Waters. He came to the United States on the ship "City Of Baltimore", landing on August 22, 1865. He said when got to the United States, all the talk was about Abraham Lincoln having been assassinated.
Walter went west to Albany County, which he said was still pretty much a wilderness. There he met the widowed Eunice Gilbert (Stark) Miller. Her husband Andrew Miller had been killed towards the end of the Civil War. Walter and Eunice married in February 6, 1866 in Shelby, Orleans County, New York.

Walter and Eunice had four children, Walter John Jr., Clara A, Benjamin Wesley, and Harriet. After the birth of Walter John Jr., Walter Sr. started going by John. The son went by Walter.

The family migrated to Kansas in 1912 and raised their children on a farm in Greenwood County, in the Pleasant Grove area. They spent their later years in Neal, where Eunice passed away in 1908.

On January 7, 1910, John married Wealthy Eldora (Avery) Stephenson. She had a young son still at home, Charles L Stephenson. They lived in Neal, and Walter continued to farm a small plot of land there until his death.
