Daughter of Harris Mandelovesky/Mandelowsky & Yetta Hurwitz/Horwitz, both immigrants from Russian-occupied Poland, Mary was their eldest, born in the Lower East Side in 1885, the year her future husband, Herman Braskin, came to America with his family.

Mary's parents moved their young family to Newark, where she would eventually meet and marry her husband in about 1904 and start her own family.

She and Herman had three children: Samuel, Frieda and Milton.

Mary died in 1930; Herman survived her for many years and is buried in King Solomon's Cemetery in Clifton.
