Max C. Shera, 86, of Westport passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14 at Miller's Merry Manor at Hope.

He was born Nov. 2, 1923 in Westport to Earl L. and Mamie (Clark) Shera. Mr. Shera was a lifelong resident of Decatur County having resided in Burney and Westport. He graduated from Sandcreek High School in 1941. After graduation he attended a business college.

He was a lifelong farmer and had driven a school bus for Decatur County Community Schools for 34 years. He was a former employee of Cummins Engine Company. He was a member of the Westport Baptist Church,

Westport Masonic Lodge # 52 F. & A.M., Order of Eastern Star Otto Chapter # 570 of Westport and a former member of the Westport Kiwanis Club.

He was a Veteran of the 255th Field Artillery Battalion having served with the US Army during WW 2 in northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and central Europe.

He was honored for his service during the invasion of Normandie.

He enjoyed hunting in his younger years, watching TV and most of all he loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed joking around with family and friends and making people laugh. For many years he attended his army reunion until failing health prevented him from going.

He married Norma Jean Champ Keith in Burney on Jan. 19, 1946 and she survives along with daughters, Karen J. (Kenneth) Israel of Hope and Theresa Kay Shera of Westport; 3 Grandchildren and 2 Great Grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Lucille Anderson and brothers, Isaac, Miles M., Stanley and W. Dwight Shera.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 18 at Bass & Gasper Funeral Home with Rev. David A. Scaggs and Rev. Steve Malone officiating. Burial will be at the Westport Cemetery with military graveside services. Family and friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
