Joseph Leo Abbott Jr. of Radnor, formerly of West Chester, died of complications of leukemia on Sunday, Sept. 12, 2010, at Bryn Mawr Hospital.
Joe was born in Philadelphia on April 13, 1953, and raised in West Chester by his parents, Dr. Joseph L. and Bernardine (Keeler) Abbott. His father was a revered medical professional, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology at Chester County and Paoli hospitals.
Joe was oldest brother of Eva, Lou, Theresa, Andy and Bill Abbott. His extended family includes four aunts, Mary L. Keeler Kaye, Gertrude Abbott Seale, Harriet Abbott Byrnes and Patricia Abbott Maggitti; and one uncle, Louis L Keeler, M.D. Joe also maintained a remarkable ongoing connection with 46 first cousins.
Joe attended St. Agnes Grade School in West Chester and graduated from Archmere Academy in Delaware in 1972.
While in high school, he was awarded the rank of Eagle Scout by the Boy Scouts of America. Joe graduated in 1976 from St. Joseph's University with a bachelor's degree in accounting.
While attending St. Joseph's, Joe met his wife, Stephanie Rair. Upon their marriage on Oct. 11, 1980, they moved to Narberth, where they lived and raised three children, Mary (Molly), Joseph and Megan.
The family moved to Radnor in summer 2000.
Professionally, Joe was a senior executive, serving for nearly two decades as the national sales manager at Godwin Pumps of America, located in Bridgeport, N.J. Joe helped the company grow to an international corporation, where he oversaw branches across the United States. In this role, Joe visited all 50 states and traveled extensively across the globe, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Russia, Mongolia and Central America.
Joe was a loyal husband, loving father, faithful son, caring brother and kindest of friends.
He had a lifelong passion for learning, an insatiable curiosity for knowledge and exceptional work ethic.
Joe was a reserved, modest, skilled mediator in all situations. He was eager to help others, including the less fortunate, and found true happiness in providing for his family and friends.
His infectious smile, unique laugh, twinkling Irish eyes and quick wit will be sorely missed by all.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 19, at the Chapel of St. Joseph's University (St. Joseph's University Campus) 5600 City Ave., Philadelphia, and to his Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 20, at St Thomas of Villanova Church (University Campus), Lancaster Avenue, Villanova.
Burial services are at St. Agnes Cemetery, North High Street (1050 Pottstown Pike), West Chester.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Life Center of Eastern Delaware County — Meal Program, 6310 Market St., Upper Darby, PA 19082.
