Known as the "Father of Lake Winola", Civil War veteran Clark Frear more than anyone, put Lake Winola on the map as a summer resort for the Scranton-Wilkes Barre region, building a large hotel at the lake in 1885 and promoting it with the "Legend of Princess Winola", a romantic tale of unrequited love which ended when an Indian 'Princess', forbidden by her father Chief Capouse from marrying a white man, leaping to her death into the lake from a rocky ledge - rather conveniently located where Clark would build his hotel.
