Daniel Bernard Kroh (son of JACOB KROH and SARA TICE) was born 26 Feb 1832 in Tiffin, Ohio(?), (Death certificate says he was born in VA in 1831; his daughter's death certificate says her father was born in Ohio) and died February 10, 1916 of arteriosclerosis.

In the 1850 Census, at the age of 18, he was living at the home of his parents in Seneca Co Ohio. He had attended school within that year.

In 1851 he is listed as a student at Heidelberg College in Tiffin, "Scientific and English Course".

He married Hanna L. Shepard on March 10, 1856 (Registered 26 Feb 1856) in Tiffin, Ohio.

I can find nothing on this family on the 1860 census, nor the family of his wife Hannah (parents Israel and Nancy Shepard). The families came from the same area of Ohio and settled in the same area of Hillsdale county. Daniel and Hanna's young son, William, was born in Ohio in 1860, and died in Hillsdale County in 1862.

According to the Hillsdale Biographical Album, Daniel and Hannah lived with one of their families for about a year after their 1856 marriage; moved to the Sandusky area for four years, then moving to Hillsdale Michigan in 1861, so they should have been on the Ohio 1860 Census.

In June, 1863, he ("Daneil" Kroh) registered for the draft (Civil War). He was married, and aged 33, living in Jefferson Twp. Hillsdale Co MI. Lists Ohio as birthplace. Like most everyone else, he was a farmer.

In the 1870 Census, he is listed under Daniel "Crow", wife "Hanah" in Jefferson Twp. Hillsdale Co MI. Jacob Kroh, aged 18 and Lucretia "Locretic Crow", aged 2 are also living there.

In the 1880 Census, he was at Jefferson with his small family, Hannah, son (Jacob Henry) Henry and (Almina) Mina. A farmer. (This one has his father born in PA.)

In the 1910 Census (Daniel "Krch") he owned his farm in Jefferson Township free and clear, was married to Hannah for 55 years, and could read and write. The family was living close to Israel Shepard, Hannah's brother.

Hillsdale County Biographical Album

Daniel B. Kroh, proprietor of the South Jefferson Steam Evaporating Works, established in 1884, is familiarly known throughout this township and vicinity as one of its most enterprising men. He first opened his eyes to the light over fifty-six years ago, in Seneca County, Ohio, the exact date of his birth being Feb. 26, 1832. Our subject is the scion of excellent and substantial ancestry, being the son of Jacob and Sarah (Tice) Kroh, who were natives respectively of Pennsylvania and Virginia, and of German ancestry. Daniel B., our subject, was the sixth child of the first marriage of his father, Jacob. The boyhood days of Daniel B. Kroh were spent upon the farm of his father, and when twenty-four years of age he started out for himself. He was married, March 13, 1856, to Miss Hannah L. Shepard.

Mr. and Mrs. Kroh after their marriage lived on the home farm about one year, then removed to Wyandot County, where Mr. K. purchased forty acres of land, upon which he farmed four years, then selling out came to this county in 1861. He had previously purchased seventy-nine acres of land in Jefferson Township, which is now included in his present homestead. To this he added until he now has 120 acres with good improvements, the land in a highly productive condition, and the buildings convenient and substantial. A well eight feet deep supplies all the water for his evaporating works, while an artesian well eleven feet deep, near the dwelling, is utilized in the cooling of milk. Another well in a field adjacent, and sixteen feet deep, supplies an abundance of water for his live stock. He makes a specialty of full-blooded ChesterWhite hogs.

To our subject and his wife there were born three children, Henry J., the eldest, Jan. 21, 1857, in Seneca County, Ohio. This son was married on the 3d of May, 1882, to Miss Frances, daughter of Alonzo and Ophelia (Russell) Parmelee, and is the father of twin boys, Wilford and Alfred, born April 13, 1884, and stout, healthy boys, who are the pride of their grandparents as well as their nearer progenitors. The second son, William A., was born in Wyandot County, Ohio, and was drowned in a well on the present homestead when about two years old; Mina L. was born July 8, 1868, and was married, Dec. 1, 1887, to William Freed, of Adams Township, this county.

Mr. Kroh, politically, is a full-fledged Democrat. He east his first vote for Franklin Pierce a short time before reaching his majority, and although taking a lively interest in the success of the principles of his party, has never been desirous of the responsibilities of office. He has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church since a young man, officiating as Steward for about fifteen years, and has also been Superintendent of the Sunday-school several years.

The evaporating works of Mr. Kroh are used principally for the preservation of fruit, although he is prepared to handle sugar water, and by the same power-the boiler forty-horse power and the engine twenty-is also equipped for the sawing of fence slats, to the number of 4,000 per day. In their fruit operations they dispose of 35 bushels of apples, pared and cored, per day, sorghum 250 gallons, and cider 50 barrels, made into jelly and apple butter direct from the fruit. This industry promises to become one of the most important in the county, being one which was very much needed by the people of this section, and which they are already beginning to appreciate at its full value.

Mr. Kroh is a very genial and companionable man, and his straightforward methods of doing business have made him a general favorite in his community, and there are none who would not be pleased to see him succeed in this new enterprise, which gives every promise of this result.

Death Notice:
Daniel Kroh, aged about 90 years, and a resident of Jefferson Township, about five miles south of Osseo, for over half a century, was found dead this morning, death likely having been due to apoplexy. He had been in poor health for some time, but this morning he got up and built the fire, then went back to bed to wait for the house to warm up, and later he was found dead by his housekeeper, Mrs. Bowen. Mr. Kroh was the grandfather of Alfred Kroh, of the city. His wife died about three years ago but he leaves a son and a daughter, Henry Kroh of Jefferson and Mina (Mrs. William) Cosway of Cambria. Mr. Kroh was one of the early settlers of the township, having himself cleared off the stumps from his land and erected a log house. Funeral services will probably be held Monday. Burial will be beside his wife in Maple Grove Cemetery, near the Blount School House.
