Grandson LeJean remembers him as a calm, quiet and affectionate man who was much respected by all in the community. He wasn't sure what his Gmpa had done for a living, but remembers he always seemed not to want for money. He recalls him going through the town of Jonesville, pushing a wheelbarrow. He would mow where he saw something that needed mowing, and planted tulips and other spring bulbs where he thought they needed to be. His hair was always in order, seemingly without effort. He was a religious man who decided to move the Methodist church when others thought to tear it down. And when George said something should be done, it was done. He was called, "Mr. Shippy" when others of the era were known by first names. He had a long workbench in his barn with a mirror over it. In the barn were also his big red horse and likely a couple of cows. Once he was having tooth pain, so he, followed by his little grandson, went out to the barn, took up pliers that he had used in the forge, and pulled three of his teeth while looking in the mirror. His wife, Jemima, gave him salt packs to put in the sockets.

OBITUARY:

George Shippy Funeral is Thursday

Village Mourns Loss of Fine Citizen

Ready and anxious to go he told his friends, George Shippy died at his home here Monday morning.

In his death, Jonesville lost one if its finest citizens. As a man who had known him for 40 years remarked, "We can't afford to lose his kind. He's always done the best he knew how in everything."

He was that rare thing, a practicing Christian, doing good whenever he could, helping others, speaking ill of no one, working for the church, uncomplaining.

After Mrs. Shippy passed away, he still greeted his friends with that same pleasant smile; he still tended his garden, he kept their house where they had lived so many happy years just as she had left it; and through it all he never mentioned the loss or the loneliness.

I doubt if George Shippy ever had an enemy. I've never heard of one, and can not imagine anyone having a grievance against him. He was a man who would far rather be imposed upon than wrong another.

His flowers and his garden were his pride; tulips his special joy. As he said at the Community banquet in January, he had set out literally thousands of them here in town.

Sick less than a week, George Shippy quietly passed on Monday noon at 12:35. Pneumonia had set in and his heart had been unable to stand the load.

If Mr. Shippy had lived until April 5, he would have been 78 years of age. This was the age his father and two brothers were when they died.

Born in Fremont Ohio, George Shippy was the son of Christina and Andrew Shippy. When 7 years old his parents came to this section settling in Scipio Township. It was there he grew to manhood and married Jemima Hangen, who lived on a nearby farm, in 1884.

Five children were born. One died in infancy, a daughter Hazel, died in 1916, the year of her graduation. The three children living are Frank of Vicksburg, Roy of Hillsdale, and Mrs. Floyd Baker.

Eight years ago, Mrs. Shippy died. For some time a grandson and granddaughter lived with him. Then he lived alone, content and happy. For years his life work has been in landscape work as he was a great lover of flowers.

Besides the three children there are 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.. Grandsons will be the pall-bearers.

The funeral was in the Methodist Church, his church home that was his life. Rev. J.M. Scott preached the sermon. Mr. Shippy had written out full instructions concerning the funeral which were carried out. Interment was in Sunset View.
