He was a U.S.Army Veteran who was disabled from the Vietnam era. He was a marine machinist for Mare Island Naval Shipyard for 16 years before working for Bob's Tow Service.
He is survived by his wife Robin Skaggs of Vallejo, sons Matthew Skaggs of Ft. Jackson, NC and Jeremy Silveira of Vallejo, daughter Jean Greer of South Dakota, his mother Waltraud Skaggs of Vallejo, sister Germain Ferris of Fresno, two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
I had the pleasure of knowing and being friends with Gary for a short time. We were both planning on dropping out of school to join the military. He in the Army and me the Air Force. We were both scared but excited about where our lives were heading. Neither of us fit in well in school.
We never got too close because we knew our friendship would be short. Dropping out of school back then was pretty much unheard of, and the military was very unpopular, but we had made that decision and were rewarded with so much more of an education than any high school diploma could ever provide.
