William was a son of Joseph Alexander, house painter, and his first wife Mary (Kelley). He was born in Albany but stayed with his grandmother Mary Alexander at Waymart, Pa after his mother died when he was only three or four years old. As he grew older he spent more time with his father, who also moved to Pennsylvania, eventually settling in Carbondale where he worked with his father and stepbrothers as a house painter and wallpaper dealer for many years.
Between 1930 and 1940, William and his wife were retired and living at 49 Copeland Ave, Carbondale. When they died, they were interred in her family's plot at Glen Dyberry, Honesdale.
