Born in 1890 near Oskaloosa, Mahaska, Iowa. In 1908, she was a telephone operator who responded to flirtations of a caller who later became her husband. She married Thomas Lafayette Overton II (1887-1969) who frequently lived away from the family to maintain employment. By the early 1930's, he left for California and never came back to Iowa. This left her alone to raise six children. The family moved around the upper midwest, starting in Iowa, then Minnesota, Wisconsin, and finally in Illinois.
