Harry R. Calkins, 78, of Midland, died Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, at the MidMichigan Medical Center.
He was born Feb. 10, 1928 in Tustin, to the late Louis and Florence (Fox) Calkins and having been raised by the late Walter and Linnea Rudolph. On Feb. 4, 1951 he married the former Doris M. Trowbridge in Harrison. Harry had served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Doyle and had been past commander of the V.F.W. Post in Harrison. Upon his return from military service he went to work for the U.S. Conservation Department where he manned fire watch towers in the Harrison area. He retired from The Dow Chemical Co. in 1986 after 31 years of service as a supervisor in the Bromide Labs and had served as past president of N.M.A. (National Management Association). Upon retirement he became increasingly active in Mt. Haley Township where he served as township clerk, previously having been the township building inspector. Harry was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting, fishing, and gardening.
He is survived by his wife Doris M., sons: Robert (Jeanne) Calkins, Kelly, and Tony (Sharon) Calkins all of Midland; grandchildren, Tiffany (Michael) Leiter of Freeland, Nicholas, Brandi, Cory, Randy, Ryan all of Midland; great grandchildren Mason, Geoffrey, Jonathan Leiter, Tavin Dorian and Lyneah Rose VanHorn. He is also survived by his brother James (Ruth) Calkins, of Tustin, and sister Vina Moffit of Cadillac.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by brothers Mike and Louis, and sister Ada Calkins. Funeral services will take place 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 25, 2006 from the Faith Wesleyan Church, 654 S. Meridian Road; Pastor Dennis Curell will officiate. Harry's family will receive friends at the Faith Wesleyan Church on Friday from 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. and at the church on Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of service. There will be no visitation times at the funeral home.
