Cookeville Herald Jan 21, 1932

John Martin Dowell, 74, died at his home on Dixie Avenue here early Monday morning after being stricken with paralysis early Sunday. Although he had not been in the best of health for the past 2 weeks, his passing was unexpected.
Mr. Dowell lived in Putnam county and Cookeville most of his life, having spent some time in Jackson county.
He was born November 15, 1857, the son of John and Rebecca Dowell, pioneer members of Putnam county citizenry, and prominent farm dwellers on what was known for years as the Dowell Home Place about 2 miles south of Cookeville on Bunker Hill Road.
Mr. Dowell was a farmer for several years, later coming to Cookeville where he entered the grocery business with W J Byrne, on the square. He was associated with Mr. Byrne for about 12 years. He was not a man of activity, preferring to lead the quiet life that marked his residence here. For many years he had been president of the Cookeville Home
Telephone Company, to which position he was re-elected at a recent meeting of stockholders.
He had the qualities of character and personality that made him looked upon as a man of noble ideals and traits, and through his kindliness he had obtained the lasting friendship of hundreds.
He had been married 3 times; first to Mary Addie Johnson (of Jackson County, TN), then to Cleora Byrne, then to Callie Sherrill, who survives.
Funeral services were conducted at the Cookeville Church of Christ Tuesday afternoon by Dr O H Tallman, with burial in the City cemetery.
Besides his widow, he is survived by 4 brothers; R H of Granville; J L of Roy City,

Texas; W B and J B of Cookeville, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Loftis of Cookeville
