John B Hatch was raised in Springfield, Mass where his father was a merchant and bank director. John ventured into banking at Cincinnati, Ohio with brothers George and William. William stayed there; George moved south to Florida when the Civil War began and settled at Apalachicola; and John prospered as an oil merchant before moving back East to Medford, Mass where his father-in-law Edmund Hastings was a successful merchant. The Hastings-Hatch home, "Rock Hill" was located at the foot of Hastings Lane, overlooking the Mystic River and canal. Upon his death, John was buried at Oak Grove Cemetery with his late wife and her family members whose graves had been moved there in 1885 from the burial ground at "Rock Hill" after they sold that property.
