Elizabeth Hatch spent teenage years in Cincinnati, Ohio where her father and uncles ventured into the banking and oil businesses. When the family returned to Medford, her father bought the house at 87 Mystic St that belonged to well-known abolitionist minister John Pierpont and his wife Harriet (Fowler). Both John and Harriet had been married before, and had grown children from those marriages.

Archie Fowler, Harriet's son by her first marriage, met Elizabeth Hatch shortly before the Civil War. He served in the War as a US Navy surgeon and shortly after War's end, he and Elizabeth were married aboard the USS Bibb off the coast of Savannah -- the ship on which Archie served. Elizabeth recalled years later, how Southern "ladies" would spit in her direction when she walked Savannah's streets.

Archie called her "Elly" and the US census taker listed her as "Ellen" in the roominghouse at Brighton, Mass where they lived with their daughter Anna Mason Fowler in 1870.

Elly's great-granddaughter Anna Feeley (1916-2008) remembered "Grammie Fowler" living at 87 Mystic St with Anna's grandparents Lyman and Anna (Fowler) Sise, until Elly's death in 1921 when Anna was five years old.
