Patrick R. Tobin was born to William and Katherine (Hearn) Tobin in the Ballybricken neighborhood of Waterford City, Ireland in August of 1842. He was baptized in the Ballybricken Holy Trinity Without Church (which still stands today)in the following September. He had at least two brothers, Edmund and Michael.
Patrick immigrated to the US with his new bride, Margaret Breen Tobin, of Limerick County, in 1868, the same year they were wed. When they first arrived in America, Patrick and Margaret lived with Thomas and Margaret Tobin (likely Patrick's paternal uncle)in Fortville, Indiana, where Patrick engaged in farming.
He and Margaret had six children: Mary H., Margaret C., Thomas M., Rosa Anna, James William and Patrick J. They were members of St. Thomas church in Fortville.
