He entered the US Marine Corps in 1944 and as a member of the First Marine Division, he made the landing on Okinawa April 1, 1945. At war's end he went with the 3rd Bn, Fifth Marines direct to Beijing (Then Peking) and spent ten months in China.
Returning to the United States in mid August he entered college, completed undergraduate studies and was in law school when called to duty in the Marine Corps and commissioned a Second Lieutenant in November 1950.
On his way to Korea in March 1951, he married his high school sweetheart Barbara Gowen, after having written letters to each other for seven years. They had one child, Deborah Spence who resides with them.
Returning to law school in September 1952, he was granted a JURIS DOCTOR degree from George Washington University in February 1954. The family then returned to Idaho where he was admitted to the Idaho State Bar and elected Prosecuting Attorney for Valley County until 1958 when he entered private practice in McCall, ID.
In 1960 he accepted a Regular Commission in the US Marine Corps and served as a Judge Advocate in Okinawa, Camp Lejeune, N.C., Barstow, CA and Vietnam. In September 1968 he returned to the United States and was assigned to Headquarters Marine Corps, Washington D.C.
In 1971 he was again assigned to Okinawa. In his final tours of duty he served as Staff Judge Advocate at MCAS El Toro, CA and MCB Camp Pendleton, CA.
He retired on June 30, 1980 with thirty years active service. The family has resided in Lewis County since 1990.
