Walter Schaefer Jr. was born on September 29, 1915, in New York. By 1940, he was living at 1 Memorial Park Drive (later 19 Calico Lane) in Nutley, New Jersey. At the time, he was working in advertising.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and became a naval officer. He was part of the crew of the USS Upshur from 1941 to 1945, which escorted U.S. ships across the Atlantic Ocean from 1941 to 1943, and on other escort missions from the U.S. Eastern seaboard to Mediterranean Sea, North Atlantic, and Caribbean Sea, from 1944 to 1945. He was also a commissioned officer on the USS Barney in 1945, which escorted convoys in the Caribbean, and engaged in training exercises with submarines in Long Island and Block Island Sounds.

He later worked in textile sales and lived for many years at 44 W. 10th Street in the West Village, which included a penthouse, with a remarkable view of the Empire State Building.

He was an accomplished cook and participated in neighborhood choral arts groups. He was a devout Catholic. During his adult life he owned many sailboats, including the Cheetah which he sailed along the East Coast. He was a long time student at the Art Students League and produced many oil paintings.

Walter married Carol Johnson and they had one son named after his father. They divorced in the 1950s. Walter re-married to Ellen Kerksieck. They later divorced, although Ellen kept the last name of Schaefer. [1]

He died in October 1990. He was buried in the same cemetery as his mother.
