COLUMBUS, KS — Martin D. Baird, 62, of Columbus, Kan., died at 2:07 a.m. Aug. 19, 2010, at St. John's Regional Medical Center following a long illness. Martin was born Dec. 12, 1947, in Columbus, the son of Harold S. and Susie Ruth (McCormick) Baird. He was a lifelong resident of the area and attended area schools. He married Patricia A. Witham in Miami, Okla.; they later divorced. Martin was a union pipefitter for 40 years and retired as a journeyman. He belonged to Joplin Union No. 658 and Springfield Union No. 172. He was of the Christian faith, loved to garden, fish, build houses, was a gun collector, carpenter and a jack of all trades and master of one. Survivors include children Steven G. Baird and wife Amy, of Galena, Kan., Christopher Baird, of Hollister, Mo., Heather Kosman and husband Eric, of Frontenac, Kan., and J.D. Baird and wife Victoria, of Branson, Mo.; sisters Reba Vaughn, of Galena, and Carolyn Jenkins, of Duquesne, Mo.; and grandchildren Savannah, Nick, Austin, Maddie, Chance, Landon, Meadow and Jason. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his grandchildren, Brooklynn and Nevaeh. Graveside memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, at Edgmand Cemetery in Columbus. Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery for services. Services and arrangements are by Midland Cremation Society, 1515 W. 10th St., Ste. B, Joplin, MO 64801.
