On Sunday, August 15th, Dewitt T. Baker, affectionately known as Baky, left his earthly life behind and entered into his heavenly home.
Dewitt was born October 6, 1934 in Wichita Falls, TX. He earned his B.S. in Mathematics and Physics from Texas Tech University, and then attended Texas A&M, receiving his M.S. in Industrial Engineering. He often said he left Lubbock and came to "God's Country," in regards to entering Texas A&M.
A funeral celebration will be conducted on Wednesday, August 18th, 10:00 AM at the A&M Church of Christ, 2475 East Rudder Fwy., So., College Station, TX 77845. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 6:00 to 8:00pm Tuesday, August 17th at Hillier Funeral Home. The family requests that if attending, dress in bright colors as this is a victory celebration for Dewitt.
Dewitt served his country in both the Army and Navy branches of our military. His work life included computer work for NASA and private companies. After retiring, he and his wife lived and worked in Honduras for 6 years, teaching, mentoring students at a university, plus working in 2 clinics.
Of all these accomplishments though, the role in which he was most proud, was his life as a Christian. Dewitt obeyed his Lord in baptism at a young age, becoming a member of the Lord's church. He taught classes, served as a Deacon and even did some preaching, being faithful to God for some 60 years. Dewitt's devotion to his God evidenced itself greatly during the last few months of life, when, though not feeling well, he always wanted to be in worship with other Christians. Sometimes he was only able to be there for a short period of time, but he always tried. Shortly before his death, he told his wife, "the two most important things are to love God and love each other." His priorities were right and in the proper order.
Dewitt is survived by his wife, Billie Jean, whom he grew up with in Dallas, TX, attending elementary, junior high and high schools together, even living on the same street. He loved telling people he walked Billie Jean to school, carried her books, and pulled her pigtails.
He is survived by his children: David and Tina Baker, Jim Allen, Dorthi and Scott Bearden, Dwight Baker, Doris Anne (Dab) Lewis, Emmy Lewis, Paul and Cindy Atkinson, Cheryl and John Focht, and Ruth Atkinson; grandchildren Tyler and Nicole Baker, Sara Baker, Russell and Miranda Kirby, Joshua and Deb Kirby, Mary Aubri Bearden, Deton and Grady Bearden, Candra, Camden, and Cheney Lewis, Leah and Nate Lucas, Laura Atkinson, Kyle and Emily Focht, Sarah Focht, Thomas Focht, Roxanne and Richard Holt and Royce Browning-Nash; great-grandchildren Tristan Bearden, Aidan and Caulen Kirby, Ethan and Lathan Lucas, and Caleb Holt. Also surviving is the mother of Dewitt's children, Mike Randermann and Jimmie Kirby, Russell and Joshua's father, plus many nieces, nephews, and numerous friends around the world.
Dewitt was preceded in death by his parents Dewitt and Flora Baker; a daughter Patricia Diane Allen, and three siblings Burl Baker, Evelyn Lewis and Florene West.
Serving as pall bearers are David and Tyler Baker, Jim Allen, Russell and Joshua Kirby, Scott, Deton and Grady Bearden, Emmy Lewis, Al Postelwait, and Stephen McClaran. Honorary Pall Bearers are Dwight Baker, Camden and Cheney Lewis, Kyle and Thomas Focht, Royce Browning-Nash, and Nathan McClaran.
