Genealogist, Surgeon. Colonel Charles Edward Banks, MD, is best known for his genealogy research and publications. He studied at the Portland School for Medical Instruction, Bowdoin Medical School and graduated from Dartmouth Medical School. He served for nearly half a century in the United States Marine Hospital Service. By the time of his death, he had collected evidence or clues for the English origin of more than half of the English families which had immigrated to New England. Between 1878 and 1931 he published 126 genealogical works. After his death, his research was responsible for an additional 123 posthumous publications bearing his name. Many of his manuscripts and genealogical notes can be found at the Rare Book Room at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. In the preface of his publication the "History of Martha's Vineyard" he summed up genealogy research, "I have been diligent in gleaning materials, but the last fact will never be found for many years to come."
