WINSTON-SALEM - William Henry Andrews departed this life on Saturday, August 14, 2010, surrounded by members of his immediate family at his home in Winston-Salem, NC. Born December 18, 1930, to Daniel W. and Jessie Stevenson Andrews, Sr., Mr. Andrews was the youngest of five siblings. He attended public schools of Winston-Salem and graduated from Atkins High School with the Class of 1948. He graduated with a BS Degree in Commercial Industries from Tuskegee Institute in Tuskegee, Alabama. A member of the ROTC, he was commissioned to 2nd Lieutenant, U.S. Air Force. He was promoted to Captain while serving and promoted to Captain in the U. S. Air Force Reserves. After a long and illustrious career, Mr. Andrews retired from the Housing Authority of Winston-Salem and was Chairman of the Housing Authority Board of Commissioners of Winston-Salem for 10 years. He was builder and former owner of Andrews Heights in Winston-Salem. Mr. Andrews was a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Highland Avenue; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity; Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity; Bachelor Benedict Club; and the Tuskegee University Alumni Association. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gwendolyn Jessie Andrews originally of Mobile, Alabama whom he met at Tuskegee; a son, William Henri Andrews II of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Joya A. Coleman (Herbert) of Miami, FL; a brother, Daniel W. Andrews, Jr. (Janet) of Winston-Salem; and five grandchildren, David Michael Andrews of Columbia, MD, Kimberly Joi Andrews of Pittsburgh, Pa.; and, Jade Alicia Coleman, Herbert Coleman, Jr.; and Emanuel Coleman all of Miami, FL.; and a devoted sister-in-law Mary Andrews of Winston-Salem and brother in law Rev. E.E. Bufford of Nashville, Tennessee and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Wednesday, August 18, 2010, at First Baptist Church, located at 700 Highland Avenue, with family visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the William H. Andrews/Housing Authority of Winston-Salem Scholarship Fund of the Winston-Salem Foundation, or to The KBR Hospice & Palliative Care Center of Winston-Salem. (Clark S. Brown & Sons)
