Longtime area resident John William Westover, 97, died Saturday at Harrison Memorial Hospital as a result of flu complications.
He was born July 7, 1887 in Genoa, Ill., and served in the Navy from 1909 to 1913. While in the Navy, he served in the Nicaraguan Rebellion and aboard the coal-fired cruiser USS California.
Following discharge, he lived in Iowa, North Dakota, and moved to Belfair area prior to World War II. He lived in Belfair for many years, while employed at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
Mr. Westover retired from PSNS, and also had been employed by a railroad. He moved to Bremerton in 1980.
His wife died in 1957. Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Westover of Bremerton; a sister, Lucille Koplau* of Fort Collins, Colo., three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, all of the Puget Sound area.
At his request, there will be no services.
