George William Behrendt

When George William Behrendt was born on November 28, 1900, in Illinois, his father, Frank, was 37 and his mother, Mathilde (Klinger) was 33. They were German immigrants who had come to the United States in 1885. George had three brothers and three sisters. Two of his sisters, Agnes and Gertrude died in the S.S. Eastland Disaster on the Chicago River. It was a lake passenger steamer which had been chartered by their employer, Chicago's Western Electric Company, on July 24, 1915.

He married Ida Gaffket in 1925 in Chicago, Illinois. They had four children during their marriage. Three boys, George Jr., Robert, Richard and one daughter, Lorraine. His son George died in 1959, from complications of a tragic accident that had taken place when Georgie was 15 years old and had been crushed in a service elevator, and spent the remainder of his life in an iron lung in the hospital.

George Retired from Wilson Sporting Goods where he had enjoyed working most of his adult life.

George was a good man that enjoyed traveling and time spent with his family. He fell in love with the Colorado mountains, and Jim and Eva Perkins ranch, while visiting there. Even getting around the horses became pleasant to him. One year he and his wife, Ida, attended the State Fair in Pueblo, which they thoroughly enjoyed, and his grandchildren enjoyed being able to share this experience with them.

He and Ida were married for 43 years at the time of her death. He married Erma P. Ruggles a short time before his death.

He died on November 20, 1971, in Elmwood Park, Illinois, at the age of 70. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida, his son, George Jr., his sisters, Agnes, and Gertrude, and his parents. George will be long remembered and treasured in our hearts for his quite mannerisms and humor.
