Steven Eugene Guffey, 51, of North Pole passed away Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2010, at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital following his battle with cancer.
Steve was born on May 25, 1959, in Decatur, Ill. Following high school, Steve served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force for more than 23 years. He was a decorated veteran and served in Desert Storm. He was stationed in Phoenix, Las Vegas, Valdosta, Ga., Tucson, Ariz., Provo, Utah and and Kunsan, Republic of Korea.
Steve was married to Marianne Perry on Dec. 14, 1992, in Madison, Fla. He and his family moved to Alaska in 1995. He was employed by the Fairbanks North Star Borough as a heavy-duty mechanic specializing in fire trucks.
Steve received his bachelor of business administration degree from Wayland Baptist University. Steve was a very family-oriented individual. He was a loving husband, father, son and brother. Steve had many friends and was very active in the Fairbanks community. Steve often was found assisting with activities and events his children were involved in. Before his battle with cancer, Steve enjoyed camping, boating, hunting and fishing with friends and family.
Steve had a wonderful sense of humor and a knack for storytelling. Although Steve did not follow professional sports all that often, he was an avid fan of local sporting events especially Goldpanners baseball and anything involving his son Rodney. Steve also enjoyed "talk radio" and had very strong views which he would share with his friends, often sparking good natured debates.
He was a foster parent for nine years and was involved in the Catholic Schools of Fairbanks, E-range and Pro-Tech shooting matches. Steve will be dearly missed, which was made evident during the final days of his life, as he received hundreds of visitors while at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital.
Steve is survived by his loving wife, Marianne Perry Guffey of North Pole; their four children and families, son Rodney Perry Guffey, 12, of North Pole, son Seth Everett Guffey, 27, of Destin, Fla., daughter Erica Lawler Niehanke, 30, and her children, Avery Elizabeth, 11, Barrett Dane, 8, and Caitlyn Doreen, 4, all of Lake Park, Ga., daughter Dianna Salina Therrien, 26, and her husband, Joseph Anthony Therrien and their children, Salina Joy, 6, and Joseph Anthony Jr.,1, all of Hill Air Force, Utah; mother; Judith C.
