Gerald served as a Private, Headquarter's Squadron, 19th Bomber Group, Heavy, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in San Francisco County, California and was previously a member of the California National Guard prior to the war.

The National Guard unit he was previously a member of was called into full time active Army service on May 2, 1941, prior to the war, from Camp San Luis Obispo, California. Since he had only been out of the Guard for less than three months he was called back into service with the unit. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a Actor and also as Single, without dependents.

He became a POW of the Japanese Army in the "Fall Of The Philippines" in May, 1942.

Gerald "Died While A POW" of the Japanese Army at POW Camp 1, Cabanatuan 1-2-3, Nueva Province, Luzon, Philippines 15-121 during the war.

He was awarded the Prisoner Of War Medal and the Purple Heart.

His remains were not recovered.

His brother, 1st Lt. Albert J. Bidgood, was also "Killed In Action" during the war in France.
