1st Lt. Samuel Belk Williams enlisted in the U S. Army Air Corp on March 30 1942 in Atlanta Fulton GA. On his last mission, Lt. Williams was the pilot of a C-47 with the 304 SQ 442 TR Carr Gp along with the crew - 2nd Lt. Wm. J. Donohue, co pilot, 2nd Lt. Albert C. Brooks, navigator, T. Sgt. Major M. McCanless, crew chief and S. Sgt. David R. Madson. Also on board and listed as passengers were 1 officer and 13 enlisted men of the 5507 Parachute infantry. They took off from Fulbeck Lincs England destination Cherborg, France as part of the Normandy Invasion.
their plane was last seen June 6 1944 3 minutes after passing over the French coast. It is believed the plane was hit by ground fire and crashed. All aboard were lost.

1st Williams was awarded the Air Medal, Purple Heart, Eur-Afr Mid. Eastern (theatre ribbons - SVC: June 1942-June 6 1944 - VA# XC3696175 and should have been awarded the Presidential Unit Citation (blue ribbon with bronze star) for his unit's participation in D-Day June5-6-7 1944.
