Robert J. Cartwright, a captain in the Ridgefield Police Department, died Wednesday. The lifelong Ridgefield resident was 54.
A 1953 graduate of the Police Academy in Sea Girt, he was appointed to the Ridgefield force in 1954. Capt. Cartwright was named "Officer of the Month" in December 1957. He was promoted to lieutenant in 1974 and to captain in January 1984.
He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, Ridgefield. He was a member of the Police Honor Legion of New York and New Jersey.
A corporal in the Marine Corps during the Korean war, he earned the Silver Star .
Surviving are his wife, Anne Maisano Cartwright; four sons, Robert J. Jr., Nicholas K., and Richard, all in California, and Brett M. of Ridgefield, and a grandchild.
Services will be tomorrow at 10:15 a.m. at St. Matthew's R.C. Church, Ridgefield, with entombment in Madonna Mausoleum, Fort Lee. Friends may visit tomorrow beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Blackley Funeral Home, Ridgefield. There will be a police department service tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
