James was born in Bermondsey, London, England to Robert Hassett and Emma Elizabeth Wedge.

James was married to Hetty Martha Jacobs on 26th Aug. 1939 at Christ Church, Old Kent Road, London, and they had a son.

James served as a fusilier in the 1st Battalion, Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment), BEF in World War II and was killed in action in Italy.
