Spencer Thomas Bassett was born during the summer of in 1885 in Blackheath, [then] Kent, England. He played twice for the Woolwich Arsenal Football Club first team, and he also appeared in more than 100 games for the Woolwich Arsenal reserve team between 1906 and 1910. When football was suspended in 1915, he was playing for Southend United FC but joined the Royal Garrison Artillery in December 1915. Spencer was promoted to Bombardier before being badly wounded and sadly succumbed to his injuries during the Battle of Arras on 11th April, 1917, age 32. He is remembered with honour being buried at the Pozieres British Cemetery, France.
