George came to Canada with the final party of boys sent from Quarriers Orphan Homes of Scotland, arriving at Quebec on April 25, 1938. The boys were boarded at two tourist camps before being sent out on placement. George was placed first with farmer Frank Hudson of Kinburn, Ontario, west of Ottawa. He later had placements at Brockville and Seeley's Bay, Ontario.
George had been in Canada less than 3 years when he enlisted as a gunner at Kingston, Ontario on January 22, 1941. He was only 17 years old, and lied about his birth date, claiming he was born January 10, 1922 (which would make it seem that he had just turned 19 years old). George named his father, John Lumsden, of East Balgersho, Coupar Angus, Perthshire, Scotland as his next-of-kin.
George arrived in the UK with his regiment in October 1941. He trained and served in the UK over the next few years, until his regiment was deployed to Italy in October 1943. George served throughout Italy and was promoted to Lance Corporal on August 29, 1944. Sadly, he was killed in action only days later on September 2, 1944.
