In the 1940 census he lived in Prairie Grove, Arkansas and was 16. His father was a farmer and James worked on the family farm after high school until he enlisted.
James enlisted in the Army on 7 May 1943 at Little Rock, Arkansas. He was placed in the Army Air Force (the Air Force as a separate branch did not exist yet) and served in the 857th Bomber Squadron, 492nd Bomber Group. The 492nd was assigned to the 8th Eighth Air Force. 492nd Nicknames: The Hard Luck Group ; The Happy Warriors. Aircraft used: B-24 Liberator.

Killed aboard B-24 41-29505 at Lyons, France at 02:47 HRS in attempted landing in heavy fog at Lyon-Bron Airfield after # 3 engine failure. Eight of the nine crew members aboard perished. His position was top turret gunner. The flight originated in Harrington, Great Britain. (Source is US Army Air Force Report of Aircraft Accident)
