Air Medal Citation (full citation needed): The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Air Medal (posthumously) to Second Lieutenant William A. Clark, Jr., (ASN: O-763495), United States Army Air Corp, for meritorious achievement in aerial flight as Pilot of a P-47 Thunderbolt in Fighter Squadron Three Fourteen, based at Le Luc Airfield, France. During operations against enemy aggressor forces on 28 August 1944, Lieutenant Clark participated in daring flight over an active combat area destroying an enemy convoy in the face of grave hazards. By his courage, skilled airmanship and devotion to duty he contributed materially to the success achieved by his squadron and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Army Air Corp.
Clark, William A Jr - Lt Wm A (Lonnie) Clark Jr, son of Mrs Levon Clark, husband of Ernestine Wilson Clark from Gregg County in far east Texas. The county seat is Longview. Lt. Clark entered the Air Corps in 1943. Trained at Hemet, Calif, Phoenix, Ariz, Pecos, Texas and Tallahasse, Fla.
The 314th Fighter Squadron converted from Curtis P-40 Warhawks to Republic P-47 Thunderbolts in July and supported the assault on southern France in August by dive-bombing gun positions, bridges, and radar facilities, and by patrolling the combat zone. It gave tactical support to Allied forces advancing through France.
The squadron moved to Le Luc Airfield, France, 23 August 1944

Longview Daily News, 20 September 1944: SYMPATHY is offered to MRS. ERNESTINE WILSON CLARK and MRS. LAVON CLARK who were notified Monday that their husband and son, LT. W.A. (Lonnie) CLARK, Jr., pilot of a Thunderbolt, was killed in action over France on August 28. Lieutenant Clark, a graduate of Longview High, was a splendid young man. Note: Lt Clark's wife Ernestine "Pinki" was a proofreader for the Longview Daily News and Journal.
