Gilman was the youngest of seven children of Edwin Charles and Sophie R. Morrow Sirois.
He was born and raised in Fort Fairfield, Aroostook County, Maine.
He enlisted in the US Army on December 17, 1943 and completed basic training at Camp Devens, Massachusetts. He would become a part of the Seventh Army, 30th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Division.
He landed in Italy and took part in the Southern France Invasion where he was wounded in the leg. After a month in a convalescent hospital, he returned to service.
His last letter to his mother was written on January 23, 1945. In it, he described how he and other soldiers were living in a cellar in a bombed out town with several priests, nuns and refugees.
The following day, he was killed in action at the Colmar Pocket Invasion in Riedwihr, Haut-Rhin, Alsace, France. He was awarded the Purple Heart with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster.

He is buried at the Epinal American Cemetery in France.

He was a brave man and is greatly missed.
