He was flying a P-51B named "Deviless 2nd" which took off from East Wretham on a bomber escort mission. He followed a FW190 directly towards the center of Paris where he was met by an intense flak. The Germans reported that his P-51 crashed at Villacoubly, France. He was initially buried in the Community Cemetery 'Des Gonards' at Versailles.
