Infantryman Dies From Wounds
Pvt. Sam C. Morrelli
"Word was received by Mr. and Mrs. A. J. (Amico Justin) Morrelli, of 1248 Liberty, that their son, Pvt. Sam C. Morrelli, died on Nov. 18 from wounds received in action in France. He Left for overseas the latter part of Sept. with the army infantry (Infantry Regiment 324, Division 44).
Pvt. Morrelli was born in Ogden on March 14, 1923. He attended St. Joseph Catholic school, graduated from Ogden high school in 1939, and attended Weber college, where he was active in Frenisti club.
He enlisted in November 1942, in the air corps engineer reserve and left with the college group on April 8, 1943. He attended the University of South Dakota for nine months and was then transferred to the infantry.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic church and of the Knights of Columbus. Surviving are his parents, two sisters and one brother, Virginia, Mary and Michael Morrelli."

Sam's family was in need of a bigger Home. His father Amico 'Mike'. . . "with Sam, who was 12, worked every morning, night, and weekend to build their new house. They did everything. It turned out to be a beautiful 2 bedroom, full basement (with bedroom) brick home. The family was very proud of it. Sam was awarded a new bike for all his diligence which was a very big reward for my Amico to give for he made only $125 a month. . .
The U.S. officially entered World War II Dec. 8, 1941. At age 19, Sam joined the Army Reserve Corps on Nov. 27, 1942. When he enlisted, he received a deferment date (an officially sanctioned postponement of compulsory military service) of June 1945 while he attended college. Unfortunately, he must have been needed sooner, as he was sent to the European Area where he died in service of his country on Nov. 18, 1944, at the age of 21.
He was awarded a Purple Heart after his death."

Sam's father 'Mike' worked at the (old) Dee Memorial Hospital, in Ogden, as Plant Operations Engineer. Mike was in charge of maintaining the steam boiler units to deliver heat to the many hospital rooms. In the 1940 US Census, Sam is age 17, and is listed as a Mechanic's Helper at the General Hospital.

"On 13 Nov. 1944, (Army Infantry Div. 44) jumped off in an attack northeast, forcing a passage through the Vosges Mountains east of Leintrey to Dossenheim, took Avricourt, 17 November, and pushed on to liberate Strasbourg, along with the 2d French Armored Division. After regrouping, the Division returned to the attack, taking Ratzwiller and entering the Ensemble de Bitche in the Maginot Line. Fort Simserhof fell 19 Dec."
