He was serving as the pilot on a B-17G which took off from Podington, assigned to target Lyon-Bron airfield, France. They were attacked by six fighters on the return which knocked out the oxygen, completely destroyed the electrical system and caused severe damage to the cockpit. The warning system was also knocked out and he went to the rear to advise the crew to bale out when the aircraft exploded. At 1245hrs the wreckage fell at Viglain, 19 miles south-east of Orleans, France. 7 KIA 2 POW 1 evaded
