In 1919, the young Annibal was only six years old when he moved to the United States to make this country his new home with his family. In 1940, he married a beautiful young woman by the name of Helen. They were living in New Bedford, Massachussets when Annibal Aguiar was called to serve in the United States Armed Forces in September of 1943.
When he was sent to Europe to fight against the German Army, Pvt Aguiar was assigned to the 157th Infantry Regiment, 45th Infantry Division. This unit had been in combat in previous campaigns in Sicily and Italy including Salerno and Anzio.
On September 23rd ,1944, while fighting near Epinal, France, Pvt Aguiar was killed in action at the age of 30. His wife Helen was the one who received the tragic news by telegram that the father of her two young daughters would not be returning home. He had only been in the army for one year and two days before he was killed.
22 years after his death, the bridge on state highway route 140 over Braley Road in the city of New Bedford was named as the Private Annibal Aguiar Bridge in his honor.
His wife Helen never remarried and passed away at the age of 92 in 2005. Her husband Pvt Annibal Aguiar now rests in peace for eternity at the Epinal American Cemetery and Memorial
