He was wounded during a fight between two woods west of Kijkuit and north of Castle
Hattert, east of Overloon, the Netherlands. He was taken prisoner and was brought to the German Dressing Station in Tegelen where he died the same day. He was initially buried at a provisional military cemetery in Venlo.
