He graduated from the Culver Military Academy in June 1941 and afterward was a student at Cornell University
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on March 17, 1942 in Baltimore, Maryland. He was noted as being employed as a Shipping and receiving clerk and also as Single, without dependents.
William was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-24 crashed on March 3, at Humbercourt, France at 23.30 hours during the war.
William was captured by the Field Policeman Albert. He didn't bail out because of insufficient altitude. He was last seen in a First Aid Station in France. The Germans amputated both of his legs. T/Sgt C.L. Johnson didn´t think it was necessary to amputate both legs, he probably died of shock.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
He had been overseas since November 1943 and had participated in a number of bombing missions over Western Europe before being reported as missing March 3.
