On the morning of 10 August 1944 German artillery began shelling the positions around St. Malo occupied by the 908th Field Artillery Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Paul Thompson commanding. During the fierce enemy fire the commanding officer was struck by a shell fragment, killing him. Time of his death was officially recorded as 12:18 PM.
